ISLAMABAD, Feb 7 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari has condoled the death of well known Pukhtoon nationalist leader and noted Pushto poet and writer Ajmal Khattak who died today in his hometown Akora Khattak in Nowshera. In a condolence message to Aimal Khan Khattak, the son of former President ANP late Ajmal Khattak, the President said that Ajmal Khattak belonged to that rare breed of politicians who were fast becoming extinct.

The President said that Ajmal Khattak earned a name both in the realm of politics and in poetry and literature. His revolutionary poems galvanized a generation of Pukhtoons in the decades since fifties. His books were banned and he was chased and hounded but nothing deterred him. In politics he illumined the path for generations to come with his steadfastness and courage of conviction, he said.

The President said that Ajmal Khattak was one of those rare politicians who regarded politics as a tool for the collective good of the people and not as a means for personal advancement. Whether in politics or in the field of literature Ajmal was driven by a passion to fight for the rights of the deprived and downtrodden. In this fight for democracy and for the rights of the poor and downtrodden, Ajmal Khattak went through personal traumas and tribulations but nothing daunted him from pursuing his mission, the President said. Many may have disagreed with his initial course in politics but no one accused him of dishonesty or hypocrisy, the President said.

He was a shining example of a person of modest means achieving name and fame and inspiring people by sheer dint of his abilities, character and conviction. The President also prayed for eternal rest of the departed soul and for courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss with fortitude.
